my heartfelt profession
-- a letter from the poet to the atheist

i can love you more than anybody else
look up platonic love in the dictionary
and that is my love

“ascending from passion for the individual
to contemplation of the universal ideal”

i love you more than any other thing
i know your ghost as a most familiar thing
and of your ghost
you are mine

i contemplate what is
the universal ideal
and the way I love
the imperfections of that idea

i love you therefore eternally and hold you there most truly then
i hold you eternal because i cannot hold you now
and i will hold you in heaven’s house
and i know you do not believe this

so i will simply tell you
how love does expand
so that you might comprehend
therein
the light of you that is so great
let me illustrate
and hypothesize
for suggestion

what if it were that i could take only one other with me
and you could not know the way
if i could hold only one other
taking one soul with me from the suffered and wrecked
being something of light
that divides hell’s evidence
what if it were that i could take only one
to the afterhouse of God
the eternal knowing
if that it were i could only take one
that one without question

would be you
